Corner Brick

1. The Corner Brick Loft project is a 2006 renovation of a 20,000 square foot, two-story masonry building located in historic downtown Woodburn, Oregon.

2-3. Downtown Woodburn is working to revive its historic architectural heritage, and Corner Brick Loft is a key element in this renaissance. To add a dramatic and contemporary touch to the building’s exterior and highlight the original brick and arched window casings, we washed the façade with light from new exterior fixtures.

4. Inside, our goal was to uncover historic window openings to illuminate the spaces and assist in the building’s conversion from a meeting hall to retail and event spaces. This skylight was original to the structure, but had been covered for many years. Uncovering it adds natural light to the mostly windowless interior.

5. The original structure was preserved by refinishing surfaces like floors and handrails while new hardware and lighting touches were added. We added transom windows to open an otherwise closed off space, and to increase opportunities to see through the building’s modernized interior for glimpses of its original exposed brick framework.

6. This conference facility hosts meetings requiring catering capabilities. We designed the commercial kitchen to appear warm, casually residential, and appropriate to the historic building without sacrificing modern conveniences.

7. Bringing the building up-to-date included ensuring ADA access and strictly adhering to all building code requirements while still respecting the historic atmosphere both inside and out.
