Hillside Residence
1. Our principal goal was to transform this circa 2006 traditional builder home into a series of jewel-box spaces. Because of its wooded site, the home lacked natural light and the original interior lighting scheme needed a more sophisticated approach to address the issue. The homeowners also required all new furniture and accessories. Therefore, our second objective was to adopt their personal tastes and thread them through every room, creating a cohesive and harmonious home environment.
Nearly every surface in the home was either replaced or refinished. Carpeted floors became solid walnut, and paint colors were lightened and brightened. In this room, we augmented the lighting scheme with museum-quality fixtures to better showcase our clients’ eclectic art collection. Wall colors are warm and neutral to showcase each piece without being visually competitive.
2. To showcase our clients’ keen appreciation for the elements, we chose materials throughout the home that resonated with their preferences. This formal dining room’s crystal chandelier is suspended over a custom table made from a solid slab of imported Aquarella marble. The lighting is dramatically layered to showcase each artful element; the drapery, paintings and ornamental glass are each given their own spotlights.
3. Our clients sought a home with a cohesive color palette and we envisioned a lighter, brighter space. We blended these goals by matching textiles, paint and carpets to the dominant colors in their existing artwork. Silks, leathers and satins provide inherent sheen, and each piece of furniture was custom made with coordinating materials to catch and reflect light wherever possible. Custom art floats on silk mountings specifically selected to resonate with colors in the hand woven Tibetan rug. The marble fireplace surround matches the dining room table, emphasizing that no detail in this home was overlooked.
4. Here, we introduced a large-scale light fixture that better fits the style and grandeur of the refurbished formal staircase and foyer. The stairs were rebuilt in walnut to match the rest of the home, and a new handrail was custom designed with metal and walnut details.
5. In the master bedroom, we fulfilled our clients’ wish to see their growing and eclectic collection of international objets d’art harmoniously blended in one room. African, Tibetan, Asian, Middle Eastern and Indian touches mesh seamlessly with fabric choices, pattern themes and color palette. We commissioned custom paintings above the headboard and had stone bedside lamps backlit to add artful detail in an unexpected place. The Tibetan rug was handmade in a complementary yet neutral botanical theme, and custom throw pillows provide pops of color and texture.
6. We designed this reading space to maximize function and take advantage of natural light. To visually separate the reading nook from the sleep space, we subtly shifted the palette. Bold, contemporary stripes in the sheared velvet chairs depart from the more traditional features in the room, yet tie in with colors in the duvet cover and rug, seamlessly blending the separate spaces into one harmonious retreat.
7. Originally, this room was a simple guest room in need of a facelift. Our client wanted to keep a comfortable guest space while still using the room for everyday enjoyment. We achieved both with a creative solution that blends form and function. Floor to ceiling custom built walnut shelving and bookcases maximize wall space. The sofa perfectly tucks into the unit, and unfolds into a sleeper bed, transforming the space into a viable guest room. The high-gloss turquoise lacquered bookcase doors are more than just colorful eye candy; they also open up to transform into nightstands.
